Powell Named MW Player Of The Week

Jan. 22, 2018

LAS VEGAS (UNLVRebels.com) - @UNLVLadyRebels  |  Mountain West Video Release

UNLV's Katie Powell was named the Mountain West Women's Basketball Player of the Week Monday after averaging 18 points per game and leading the Lady Rebels to a 2-0 week with a road win at New Mexico and a home victory over Colorado State, the conference announced Monday. Powell is the first Lady Rebel to receive the conference weekly honor since Dakota Gonzalez was honored on Feb. 13, 2017, while this is the first weekly honor in Powell's career as well.

Powell, a 6-4 junior center and native of Atlanta, Georgia, was key in helping the Lady Rebels extend their win streak to five games. UNLV's 68-66 victory over New Mexico Jan. 17 snapped the Lobos' 13-game home win streak, which had been the ninth-longest active streak in the nation. The Lady Rebels' 56-52 home victory over CSU Jan. 20 snapped an eight-game losing streak to the Rams. The two opponents had entered the games a combined 28-9 before falling to the Lady Rebels last week, who moved back into a tie for first-place in the Mountain West standings at 5-1.

In the win against New Mexico, she scored 18 points and tied her season-high with three treys in the road win, giving UNLV a second straight win on the Lobos' home court. UNM had entered the game shooting 43.5% but her defensive play in the paint helped hold them to 36.8% from the floor, and to 18 points below its season average. Powell also grabbed six rebounds as UNLV held a 41-35 edge on the boards in the victory.

Powell made an even bigger impact in the win over CSU, where she also scored 18 points on 7-of-16 shooting and a perfect 4-of-4 at the line. In a tight contest, Colorado State took a two-point lead twice early in the fourth quarter, and both times Powell scored on the other end to tie the game for UNLV. After CSU took a 50-47 advantage with 3:21 to play, Powell answered with a drive down the lane for a layup with 2:57 to go, and then hit a turnaround jumper from behind the free throw line at 1:49 on the clock for four straight points, giving UNLV the lead for good.

NEXT FOR THE LADY REBELS: UNLV plays a second straight home game Wednesday, Jan. 24 when it hosts Fresno State in a 6 pm contest in the Cox Pavilion. It will be both NYS Night and UNLV Appreciation Day at the contest, with four free tickets available for all UNLV Faculty/Staff. More information is available at UNLVTickets.com.
