LAS VEGAS (UNLVRebels.com) - Mountain West Video Release
For the second time in three weeks, UNLV's Katie Powell was named Mountain West Women's Basketball Player of the Week after leading the Lady Rebels to a 2-0 mark, the conference announced Monday. This is the second weekly honor in her career, while Powell becomes the first Lady Rebel to be named twice in the same season since Danielle Miller was honored three times in the 2014-15 season.
Powell, a 6-4 junior center and native of Atlanta, Georgia, continued her recent dominant play in the post, as she averaged 24.5 points on 60% shooting from the floor while grabbing 9.5 rebounds in the Lady Rebels' two victories that has moved the team in sole possession of first place in the Mountain West conference for the first time in program history.
She started off the week with a career-high scoring performance at San Jose State Jan. 31, pouring in 28 points on the Spartans' home court on 11-of-18 shooting. Powell also added eight rebounds in the 80-53 road victory.
In the Lady Rebels' showdown with Boise State on Saturday in the Thomas & Mack, which featured a matchup of two of the top three teams in the conference, Powell was a huge factor on both ends of the court. She grabbed a game-high 11 rebounds, including 10 on the defensive end, as UNLV handed Boise State its biggest defeat of the season, a 23-point margin in the 77-54 final. Powell continued her recent scoring surge as well, knocking down 7-of-12 from the floor for her 11th double-double of the year with 21 points, which also marked her third straight 20+ point outing. Her game-high five steals in the contest were a career-high as well.
For the season, Powell is averaging 16.2 ppg and 9.3 rpg, and in MW play she ranks second in both scoring (19.2 ppg) and rebounding (9.3 rpg). Her 11 double-doubles ties her for 21st in the nation. The Lady Rebels, winners of eight of their last nine games, currently are 13-8 overall and lead the MW with an 8-2 mark.
NEXT FOR THE LADY REBELS: UNLV will play a second straight home game when it hosts UNR on Wednesday, Feb. 8 at 6 pm in the Cox Pavilion. It will be a RED OUT for the Lady Rebels, as all fans wearing red to the game will receive tickets for just $3, while the first 100 fans will also receive a free UNLV red rally towel. The game is the first of two this year against the Wolf Pack as part of the Governor’s Series, the all-sports competition between the two schools sponsored by Barrick Gold and NV Energy.
