For the third time this season, UNLV's Katie Powell has been named Mountain West Women's Basketball Player of the Week after leading the Lady Rebels to a 2-0 record for the week, the conference announced Monday.
This is the third weekly honor in her career, and she is the first Lady Rebel to be named three times in the same season since Danielle Miller was also honored three times in the 2014-15 season.
Powell, a 6-4 junior center and native of Atlanta, Georgia, averaged team-highs of 17 points and 9.0 rebounds per game while leading UNLV to wins over teams that were a combined 36-18 when they faced the Lady Rebels. During that stretch, she shot shot 52% (13-of-25) from the floor, 2-of-3 from 66.7% from three-point range, and 6-of-7 from the line (85.7%).
In UNLV's 73-58 win at Fresno State on Feb. 21, which avenged its last second-loss in Las Vegas earlier this season, Powell was limited to just three minutes in the first half with foul trouble. She came back to score 12 points, eight rebounds in the second half to help the Lady Rebels extend a five-point lead to a 15-point win. The win snapped Fresno State's 10-game home win streak, which had ranked 16th longest in the nation at the time. For the game, she finished with 14 points and a game-high 10 rebounds for her team-high 12th double-double of the year. She added two assists and two blocks, and made both of her three-point attempts.
Saturday, Powell connected on 8-of-12 from the floor for 20 points on 66.7% shooting, while grabbing eight rebounds and three steals in UNLV's 74-62 victory over New Mexico.
For the season, Powell is averaging 16.3 ppg and 9.0 rpg. Her 12 double-doubles ties her for 40th in the nation. The Lady Rebels, winners of eight of their last nine games, currently are 18-9 overall and lead the MW with a 13-3 mark.
NEXT FOR THE LADY REBELS: UNLV is on the road Tuesday for a 6:30 pm contest at UNR in Reno, in the second game of the Governor's Series, the all-sports competition between the two schools sponsored by Barrick Gold and NV Energy.
