March 2, 2018
LAS VEGAS (UNLVRebels.com) -
The UNLV women’s basketball team, who won a share of the 2017-18 Mountain West regular season championship Friday night, will be the second seed in next week's MW Women’s Basketball Championships, which will be held at the Thomas & Mack Center in Las Vegas from March 5-9. UNLV finished as co-champions of the regular season along with Boise State with 14-4 conference records, but the Broncos won the tiebreaker due to their 1-1 record with third place Wyoming. UNLV lost in its only contest with the Cowgirls.
UNLV (19-10 overall) will open the tournament in the quarterfinals on Tuesday, March 6 at 6 pm, against the winner of Monday's first round contest between seventh-seed UNR and 10th seed San Diego State. The winner of Tuesday's contest will advance to the semifinals on Wednesday, while the championship game is set for Friday, March 9. The Mountain West Network will produce and broadcast live streams of all 10 women’s basketball tournament games. These games will be available on the MWN (TheMW.com/live and MW mobile applications), WatchStadium.com and Stadium’s mobile applications on Apple TV and Roku, and on UNLVRebels.com
The Lady Rebels have never met UNR in MW Tournament play, and are 0-1 against San Diego State, as No. 7 seed UNLV fell to No. 2 seed SDSU 71-63 in the 2009 semifinals. UNLV is 19-0 all-time against the Wolf Pack in Las Vegas, while it has won the last five meetings at home over the Aztecs as well. If UNLV were to face the Wolf Pack, it would count as the third game in the Governor's Series, the all-sports competition between the two schools sponsored by Barrick Gold and NV Energy. The series is currently tied at 1-1, and if there is a rubber match, the winner would receive all three points for women's basketball.
The Lady Rebels are 9-9 in their first game of the tournament, which for the first eight years of the conference was their quarterfinal contest, before three years of a double-bye system. UNLV is 5-5 all-time as the higher seed in the MW Tournament.
This is the Lady Rebels' second time as a No. 2 seed in the MW Tournament. UNLV was the second seed in the 2012 event, where was it upset by seventh-seed New Mexico 61-58.
Kathy Olivier, in her 10-year as the Lady Rebels' head coach, is 6-9 all-time with UNLV in the MW Tournament, while the Lady Rebels have an 12-18 (.400) tournament record. UNLV has advanced to the championship game once (2002), and has eight semifinal appearances in the 18-year history of the league, including two straight.
The tournament starts with the first round on Monday, March 5 with games at 2, 4:30 and 7 pm. Quarterfinal action begins on Tuesday, March 6 (12, 2:30, 6 and 8:30 pm), the semifinals are on Wednesday, March 7 (6:30, 9 pm) with the championship slated for Friday, March 9 at 12 pm. The winner of the tournament will receive the conference’s automatic bid to the NCAA Tournament.
