LAS VEGAS (UNLVRebels.com) -
UNLV LADY REBELS OPEN MW TOURNAMENT PLAY TUESDAY...
Coming off its first-ever regular season championship, the UNLV Lady Rebels look to add another trophy when they open play in the Mountain West Championships on Tuesday night in the Thomas & Mack Center. Thanks to their second-overall seed, UNLV gets a first-round bye, and will face the winner of Monday's UNR-San Diego State contest in a quarterfinal matchup at 6 pm.
The game will be live streamed on the Mountain West with Krista Blunk and Tammy Blackburn as the talent, and there will also be a UNLV radio broadcast with the call of Adam Candee and Kevaney Martin. Both will be available through UNLVRebels.com.
The Lady Rebels have never met UNR in conference tournament play, while the last time the teams met in the Thomas & Mack Center, UNLV claimed a 67-54 victory over the Wolf Pack on Nov. 21, 2010. UNLV has met SDSU just once in the MW tournament, falling to the second seed Aztecs in the 2009 tournament.
If UNLV faces UNR, it will be looking to avenge last week's loss that cost the Lady Rebels the chance for a solo regular season championship title. The game would also count as part of the Governor's Series, the all-sports competition between the two schools sponsored by Barrick Gold and NV Energy. Both teams won on their home court this season, leaving Tuesday's potential meeting as the rubber match, which if so would give all three points to the winner.
History is on the Lady Rebels' side in their potential quarterfinal matchup, as they are 19-0 all-time against the Wolf Pack in Las Vegas. When facing the SDSU Aztecs, UNLV has won the past five meetings in Las Vegas. A win against either team would send UNLV to its third straight semifinal appearance, and would give them back-to-back 20 win seasons for the first time since 1992-93 (24-7) and 1993-94 (23-7).
