Lady Rebels Face Cougars On Saturday|
March 5, 2004
PROVO, Utah. -
Coming off their biggest win of the season, the Lady Rebels hope to take their win streak into next week's Mountain West Conference Tournament as they take on BYU Saturday afternoon in Provo. On Thursday night UNLV upset first-place Utah 68-60 in overtime, breaking the Utes' 27-game home win streak, and giving the Lady Rebels their 20th win of the season. UNLV has allready wrapped up the third seed in the MWC Tournament, but look to continue to pick up wins to keep alive their chances for an at-large bid to the NCAAs. In the five-year history of the Mountain West, only one of the 11 teams that have posted 20 wins in a season not earned a bid to the NCAA (the 1999-00 Colorado State team was 20-9 after the MWC Tournament, and played in the WNIT).
Though UNLV handed the Cougars a 77-64 loss in Las Vegas earlier this season, the Lady Rebels are not looking past BYU today, as they have never won in Provo in the five years of the MWC. UNLV is 1-8 all-time against the Cougars in Provo, with the lone win coming during the 1974-75 season. For the Lady Rebels to earn their first-ever sweep over BYU, they will have to defeat the Cougars on their Senior Day. A win would give UNLV a record 10 wins in MWC play, their previous best record was 9-5 during the 2001-02 season, during which they earned an NCAA at-large bid.
The Lady Rebels have been winning off their offense, averaging a league-high 72.5 ppg, while shooting a league-best 44.8% from the floor. UNLV is 15-0 when they score 70 or more points.
