Kathy Olivier leads the Lady Rebels into this year's MW Championships.

March 7, 2014

The UNLV women’s basketball team finished the regular season tied for sixth place in the Mountain West, and will be the seventh seed in next week's Reese's MW Women’s Basketball Championships, which will be held at the Thomas & Mack Center in Las Vegas from March 10-15.

UNLV (12-18, 9-9) will open the tournament with a first-round matchup against new league member San Jose State, as the Lady Rebels will face the 10th-seeded Spartans on Monday, March 10 at 4:30 pm. The winner of Monday's game will advance to the quarterfinal round on Tuesday, March 11, to face second-seed Fresno State, who has a bye in the first round. The first round games on Monday, all four quarterfinals games on Tuesday and the two semifinal contests on Friday, March 14 will all be available on the Mountain West Network, with the digital webcast available on The championship game on Saturday, March 15, will be carried live on the CBS Sports Network.

"San Jose State is a good basketball team, they play a very up-tempo game, there's going to be a lot of fast breaks by both teams," said UNLV head coach Kathy Olivier. "We just have to make sure we're focused and make good decisions and not get to wrapped up in their tempo. We'll need to play Lady Rebel basketball, rebound and make good decisions on the break and have good transition defense."

This is the first meeting all-time in MW Tournament play between UNLV and the Spartans, but not the first meeting in a conference tournament. In the 1990 Big West Tournament, the Lady Rebels posted a 102-67 win over the Spartans in the quarterfinals in Las Vegas on the way to the tournament title. UNLV was the No. 1 seed in that tournament.

The Lady Rebels are 6-8 in their first game of the tournament, which for the first eight years of the conference was their quarterfinal contest, before three years of a double-bye system, and is 6-4 in the quarterfinals as well. UNLV is 2-4 all-time as the higher seed in the MW Tournament.

This is the Lady Rebels' third time as a No. 7 seed in the MW Tournament. The first time was in 2009, the Lady Rebels knocked off sixth-seed BYU and upset third-seed TCU to reach the semifinals before falling to second-seed San Diego State. UNLV was again the No. 7 seed in the 2010 event, falling in the first round to sixth-seeded Wyoming.
Olivier, in her sixth-year as head coach, is 2-5 all-time with UNLV in the MW Tournament, while the Lady Rebels have an 8-14 (.363) tournament record. UNLV has advanced to the championship game once (2002), and has six semifinal appearances in the 14-year history of the league.

The tournament starts with the first round on Monday, March 10 with games at 2, 4:30 and 7 pm. Quarterfinal action begins on Tuesday, March 11 (12, 2:30, 6 and 8:30 pm), the semifinals are on Friday, March 14 (12, 2:30 pm) with the championship slated for Saturday, March 15 at 7 pm. The winner of the tournament will receive the conference’s automatic bid to the NCAA Tournament.
