Lady Rebels Play WNIT First Round At Colorado Thursday

​​The UNLV women's basketball team received a postseason bid for first time since the 2011-12 season on Monday, as the Lady Rebels will play in the 2017 Postseason Women's NIT. UNLV, an at-large selection after receiving an auto-bid in 2011-12, will open play in the first round of the tournament on Thursday, March 16, in Boulder, Colo., against the Colorado Buffs of the Pac-12. Times and ticket information for Thursday's game in Coors Events Center will be announced on later this week. .

UNLV has posted its second 20-win season in the past 11 years, again the first since 2011-12, as it brings a 22-10 overall record into this year's WNIT. The Lady Rebels set several notable achievements during the season, including a new school record with 12 Mountain West Conference victories to finish in third place in the league standings. During the non-conference portion of the schedule, UNLV claimed wins over USC and Ole Miss, the program's first over a team from the Pac-12 since 2003-04, and first over a SEC team since 2004-05.

The Lady Rebels will be making their 10th all-time appearance in the WNIT. All-time they are 9-11 in the event, and turned in their best WNIT finish in 2004, winning four games to reach the championship game before falling at Creighton in the finals. In the 2011-12 tournament, UNLV dropped a first road contest at Saint Mary's by a 71-63 margin. This is the third time the Lady Rebels will play a Pac-12 squad in the WNIT, as they fell at Oregon State in the 2003 first round, before winning a home contest over Arizona State in the 2004 first round.

Colorado started the season with 10 straight wins and a top-20 ranking. But starting with a loss to Mountain West member Wyoming, the Buffs went 5-15 the rest of the way, including a one-point loss to Washington State in the Pac-12 Tournament on March 2.

 

 

All-time UNLV is 5-0 against Colorado, though the last meeting was in the 1988-89 season. That game was also the scene of one of the top individual performances in Lady Rebel history, as by halftime Pauline Jordan had already posted the first triple-double in school history, eventually finishing with 22 points, 17 rebounds and a school-record 11 blocks in an 84-74 win in the second round of the 1989 NCAA Tournament in Boulder.

The winner of Thursday's game will take on the winner of the South Dakota State-Northern Illinois matchup in the second round at a time and location to be determined after both games are completed.

The WNIT features 64 teams in a single-elimination format, with all games hosted by participating schools at on-campus sites.
