UNLV women’s basketball Head Coach Kathy Olivier and Lady Rebels; Amie Callaway, Rmanii Haynes, Danielle Miller and Aley Rohde took a trip to Gilbert Magnet Elementary School to congratulate one of the winning classrooms of the Coaches Challenge.

The annual UNLV Coaches Challenge is a collaborative effort between the Southern Nevada Health District and UNLV Athletics. It is a four-week program aimed at motivating 2nd-5th graders to develop healthier habits by encouraging a healthy diet and plenty of extracurricular activities. Students and teachers earn points each day for eating fruits and vegetables and being physically active while learning the importance of making healthy choices. In 2012, more than 13,100 elementary school kids from 555 classrooms in 112 schools signed up to participate in the challenge. The collective point total for all participants was 182,966 points (the most in the program’s six-year history). The winning classrooms receive tickets to UNLV sporting events, and the grand prize winning classrooms receive a visit from a UNLV head coach.

The Lady Rebels had the pleasure of congratulating Ms. Brass’ 4th grade class and answering questions about life as a student-athlete. The class also received a few prizes from representatives of the Southern Nevada Health District.

The Lady Rebels would like to once again congratulate the winning class, and hope that classrooms across Nevada continue to take steps to live healthier lives.
