Keeping Up With Danielle

June 18, 2013

Every Tuesday this summer, we will hear from a different Lady Rebel as she catches up readers with an account of how their summer is going, an update on their workouts and their goal for the upcoming season. This third installment is provided by junior guard Danielle Miller.

A Day In the Life of Dani

Tuesday, June 18th

After spending the majority of last summer in Vegas, I realized how important it is for me to spend more quality time with my family.  Fulfilling my commitment of being a full-time, Division I student-athlete at UNLV is very time consuming, yet incredibly rewarding.  However, spending every extra moment with my little sister Brooklyn, who has grown up so fast, means even more to me, so I have returned to my hometown of San Diego, California, and will stay with my family until summer school starts mid-July. I feel like I have missed out on so much with her now that she is in high school, especially getting to see her play basketball at my high school alma mater, where she is going to be a junior this fall.

Going home is great, but I know how important it is to stay in shape and continue to work out as I would do while in Vegas. Every morning, my mother and I go to a local neighborhood lake called “Chollas Lake.” While my Mom walks, I jog around the lake and take in the beautiful view. Later in the afternoon once my father gets off of work, I get down to business.  We head up to my old high school (Mt. Miguel) to complete my shooting and skills workout.

For the whole month of June, my Dad and I will be working on perfecting my jump shot. He knows my game inside and out. He can tell from watching me shoot just once, what I need to change or do better to help my FG percentage increase. He will watch and analyze every shot until its right. Shot, after shot, after shot. I shoot, he watches, and once the form is perfect, I continue to shoot each shot exactly as I shot the previous one - MUSCLE MEMORY!

This past Saturday, I had the honor of playing in a Breast Cancer/Mt. Miguel Alumni Game hosted by my high school coach, Robbie Sandoval. We all played in honor of our big sister, our mentor, and an all-around great person, Genevieve Costello. Gen was a proud San Diego native and Lady Matador alumni who was diagnosed with aggressive and unexpected stage IV breast cancer and passed away this past May. Playing for Gen has been, and will be, the ultimate highlight of my summer. Doing something I love, for someone I love.

Every year my role on this team has changed. Every season I must contribute more and more to the teams’ success. I have many personal goals, such as increasing my FG percentage, FT percentage, steals, fouling less and having a positive assist-to-turnover ratio.  There are two goals I want US to accomplish more than anything, and that is winning the Mountain West regular-season title and winning the Mountain West Tournament Championships.  I truly believe that all my teammates have the strength we need and the ability we need to win the conference and compete in the tournament.  Like Phil Jackson says, “The strength of the team is each individual member. The strength of each member is the team.
