"A journey of a thousand miles begins with a single step"

College is definitely a journey. My single step occurred when I first made the decision to make UNLV my home for the next four years. These past three years have been full of discovery, transformation and adventure. I still haven't been able to wrap my head around the fact that this is my last college summer and that I am preparing for my final season of basketball at the collegiate level. Most athletes spend their entire summers working on their game and trying to improve for their upcoming seasons. Even though I have utilized the end of the summer to work on my game, I spent the first half of my summer recovering. On April 25th I underwent surgery on my right leg and right knee after playing an entire season with nagging stress fractures.

Rehabilitation took about two months and once I was well enough to move about on my own I helped coach our summer basketball camps. That’s always one of my favorite parts of the summer because I get to spend long days with most of my teammates as well as all of our amazing campers.

After camps I was lucky enough, to go home to Sacramento to visit my family for the 4th of July weekend.   It is difficult to attend school in a different state and have such a demanding school/basketball schedule when you are so close to your family.  Being able to spend this holiday with them was nothing short of amazing. The weekend was full of laughter, family dinners and much needed time together.

Although this trip was a lot of fun, it had to come to an end so I could get back to Vegas and continue focusing on getting better. As soon as I returned, I wasted no time at physical therapy recapturing the mobility in my knee. I also hit the weight room a couple times a week to regain my strength.

Regardless of my surgery, this summer has honestly been one of my favorite summers because I’ve spent most of it with my sister Lauren. This is her first summer in Vegas since moving here last fall and it’s been nice having someone from my family around all the time.

Although I‘ve had a lot of fun this summer, I can’t wait to get back into high gear with the first day of school just around the corner and season starting soon after that. I’m looking forward to my upcoming senior season and making this one the best season yet.
