Sanford Picks Up Another Weekly Honor|
Dec. 26, 2011
LAS VEGAS (UNLVRebels.com) - For the third time this season, UNLV's Lenita Sanford was named the Mountain West Women's Basketball Player of the Week the league office announced on Monday. It's the second honor in the past three weeks for Sanford, and the fourth award in the first seven weeks for UNLV. Sanford is also the first Lady Rebel to earn weekly honors three times in the same season since Constance Jinks in the 2002-03 season.
A 6-3 senior and native of Inglewood, Calif., Sanford turned in one of her best defensive performances of the season to help UNLV upset Kansas State 44-38 on Dec. 20 in the BTI Invitational. Playing a KSU team ranked 23rd in the RPI and top 10 in the nation in both scoring defense and field goal defense, Sanford scored eight points, grabbed six rebounds, and blocked four shots, including two in the final minute on consecutive KSU possessions. Sanford made her biggest impact with her defensive matchup during the contest, as she guarded KSU's Jalana Childs, the Wildcats' second-leading scorer, the entire game, and held her to just 3-12 shooting for the game.
That came one night after she posted 16 points and six rebounds in UNLV's 76-57 win over North Dakota State on Dec. 19. For the week, Sanford averaged 12 points, six rebounds, three blocks, 1.5 steals, and shot 40.9% from the floor and 83.3% from the free throw line.
UNLV, 10-3 on the season, returns to action on Wednesday, Dec. 28, with a road contest at Arizona in Tucson with a 6 pm (PT) start.
