LAS VEGAS (UNLVRebels.com) - UNLV women's golf played its first round of the spring Sunday at the Northrop Grumman Regional Challenge at Palos Verdes Golf Club in Palos Verdes, California. The Rebels carded a 22-over 306 to sit in 16th heading into Tuesday's second round.
Junior Elizabeth Prior, who entered the tournament ranked No. 31 individually in the country, shot a 2-over 73 and is in a tie for 19th. Senior Mackenzie Raim, who won the tournament a year ago, was the second-best UNLV finisher of the day after carding a 5-over 76.
Arizona and reigning NCAA champion Arizona State finished round one tied atop the leaderboard at 1-over, holding a seven shot lead over third place, currently occupied by No. 1 UCLA and No. 2 Alabama at 8-over.
ASU's Olivia Mehaffey shot a round-one best 3-under 68 to lead the tournament by one stroke. Baylor's Gurleen Kaur, Alabama's Kristen Gillman and Texas' Kaitlyn Papp all sit a shot behind Mehaffey in a tie for second.
REBEL OF THE DAY: Prior picked up where she left off in the fall with her 73 on day one. In October, the Surrey, England, native shot a 16-under to win the Las Vegas Collegiate Showdown - tying the lowest three-round score in program history.
