Feb. 24, 2003
TUCSON, Ariz. - The UNLV women's golf team shot 33-over par 317 and sit in 14th place after the first round of the Wildcat Invitational on Monday.
The round marks a rough return for the Rebels, who have been idle since finishing second at the Las Vegas Founders Women's Collegiate Showdown last November.
Freshman Elena Kurokawa paced the Rebels on the afternoon, firing a team best 76 at the par-71 Arizona National Golf Course. That leaves her in a tie for 28th place, eight strokes behind Arizona State's Erin Tone, the individual leader.
The rest of the Rebel lineup could not get under 80. Sophomores Hwanhee Lee and Tina Mabanta both carded 80 on the nose and sit in a seven-way tie for 57th place. Freshman phenom Sunny Oh scored 81 to round out the Rebels' team card, and Young Pak's 84 was discarded.
Arizona State holds the team lead after a first-round score of 290.
Second-round play will commence with a 7:30 a.m. MST shotgun start.
