LAS VEGAS (UNLVRebels.com) - A day after shooting its best round of the spring, UNLV women's golf topped that Tuesday in the final round of the Jackrabbit Invitational at Boulder Creek Golf Club, shooting a 6-under 282 to finish the tournament in first at 9-under 855. The Rebels won by a staggering 53 strokes over second place North Dakota State.
The Scarlet and Gray also captured the top three spots on the individual leaderboard. Senior Mackenzie Raim carded her best single-round and three-round scores of the year, shooting a 3-under 69 in round three and a 4-under 212 for the tournament to win her first individual title of the season and the third of her career. Sophomore Nastasia Kossacky and freshman Polly Mack each ended the tournament at 2-under (214) to tie for second.
The win marks the second tournament team title for the Rebels in the last three weeks as they won their own tournament, the Rebel Beach Invitational, Feb. 26-27 at Spanish Trail Golf Club in Las Vegas, while it is their third tournament victory of the 2017-18 season. This marks Raim's first victory since she earned medalist honors last spring at both The Northrop Grumman Regional Challenge and at the Battle at Boulder Creek.
In all, every Rebel competing in South Dakota State's ninth annual invitational finished in the top 11, with half recording under par rounds Tuesday. Playing as an individual, freshman Cathy Liu shot a 3-under 69 to tie for fifth at 3-over (219), followed by junior Shannon Oh, who turned in the best single round score of her Rebel career at 2-under 70 to place eighth at 5-over 221. Coming in one shot behind Oh was junior Alyssa Getty, who finished at 6-over 222 to take ninth as an individual entrant. Fellow junior Elizabeth Prior finished one spot behind Getty in 10th at 7-over (223), while senior Texie June Petchel rounded things out in 11th with an 8-over 224.
The Bison of North Dakota State came in second at 44-over, followed by host South Dakota State at 45-over, Northern Iowa at 57-over and CSU Bakersfield at 64-over to complete the top five. Three non-Rebels cracked the top 10 - SDSU's Teresa Toscano, who finished fourth at 1-under, and NDSU's Natalie Roth and Northern Iowa's Maddie Bertsch, who both tied for fifth with Liu at 3-over.
REBEL OF THE DAY: Raim picked a good time to shoot her best round of the season with a 3-under 69 Tuesday. For the tournament, the senior shot two rounds under par and one just over it with a 73. Her score of 69 was also just one of four rounds under 70 for the entire tournament.
"It's really exciting because we are starting to play some of our best golf as we make that push towards the Mountain West Championship in April. I'm just really proud of this team." - Head coach Amy Bush-Herzer
