TEMPE, Ariz. (UNLVRebels.com) – The UNLV women’s golf team wrapped up action at the Ping/ASU Invitational with a strong showing, collecting another top-10 finish this spring. The Rebels placed eighth in the highly competitive 17-team field in the three-day event held at the Karsten Golf Club in Tempe.
No. 1 UCLA took home the team honors by a 12-stroke margin over No. 5 Arizona State with a tournament total of 5-over par. No. 13 Texas A&M was third at +21 while No. 42 TCU was fourth at +27 and No. 3 Southern California and No. 26 UC Davis tying for fifth place with a +29 total.
Ana Gulugian (UCLA) and Demi Runas (UC Davis) tied for medalist honors after shooting 1-under for the three-day event. Bruin teammates Lee Lopez and Tiffany Lua along with Marissa Mar (Stanford) and Rachel Raastad (TCU) all tied for third, two strokes off the leaders at +1.
Bethany Calvo’s final round of 3-over 74 gave her a 15th place in the field of 90. Calvo carded 15 pars and three bogies in the final round.
Sophomore Charlotte Brooks opened up the front nine with a 7-over 42, but rebounded on the back to post a 2-over par 38, finishing the day at +9 and tied for 26th in her first tournament since in nearly three weeks.
Freshman Dana Finkelstein moved up 16 spots on the leader board during the final round to tie for 32nd following a 3-over 74 on Sunday. Finkelstein played the front nine at 1-over par and carded her lone birdie of the day on the par-4 11th before finishing the back nine at 2-over.
Katerina Prorokova tied for 60th after turning in a final round of 74 while Mayko Chwen Wang shot a final round 81 to tie for 71st, rounding out the UNLV starting five.
The Rebels will be off the next week for spring break before returning to prepare for the 2012 Mountain West Championship Tournament, April 20-22 in Phoenix, Ariz. at the Wigwam Resort Golf Course
