LAS VEGAS - Loyola Marymount scored two second half goals to top the UNLV women's soccer team by a 2-0 score on Friday night in the season opener for both teams from Peter Johann Memorial Field.

The Rebels' best chance on the night came in the 10th minute when LMU goalkeeper Allyssa Clark came out of her box to clear a ball. Junior forward Ashleigh Shoughro managed to block the attempt and the ball bounced to Rebel sophomore Elizabeth Billington. With the keeper out of the goal Billington shot the ball but it was blocked by a LMU defender. The Lions had several chances meanwhile to post a score in the first half but Rebel goalkeeper Alicia Lugo played a great first half, coming up with several big saves. The Rebel backline was also credited with a team save as when the ball was loose in front of the goal following a pair of Lugo saves, LMU sent a shot that was stopped at the line by several defenders.

LMU would find the back of the net for the game's first score in the 51st minute when Jaide Garcia sent a long throw into the six yard box to find the head of Cori McGovern, who then put the ball past Lugo for a 1-0 score.

UNLV threatened late in the game with a corner kick from senior Shannon Hughes who found the head of sophomore Justine Sauder but the ball went just slightly wide.

LMU sealed the would strike again when Lacey Bartels sent a long ball from the back to find Julie Gallaudet running on the left side. Gallaudet collected the ball and hit a shot from the top of the 18 beating Lugo to the top right corner for the score in the 86th minute, putting the Lions up 2-0.

The Lions held a 19-8 edge on shots for the night, including 13-4 on shots on goal. They also had 11 corner kicks in the game to three for the Rebels. Lugo would finish with 10 saves in goal, while Clark was credited with four while earning the shutout.

UNLV will return to action next week, when it hosts the UNLV Nike Classic on Aug. 28 and 30. The first day of the tournament will see Cal State Bakersfield and New Mexico play at 4:30 pm, while UNLV and Illinois State will kickoff at 7 pm.
