Late Scores Lift Rebels Over Anteaters 2-0

IRVINE, Calif. - UNLV scored twice in the final 20 minutes of the game, including a goal from sophomore forward Ashleigh Shoughro for the second time in as many games, to give the Rebels a 2-0 win at UC Irvine in women's collegiate soccer action on Sunday night from Anteater Stadium. The win pushes UNLV's record to 1-0-1, while the Anteaters dropped to 0-1.
Shots were at a minimum in the first half, with UNLV taking just five while holding UC Irvine to a total of three. Both teams started to pick it up on offense for the final 45 minutes, with UNLV getting off seven shot attempts, with two of them finding the back of the net.
The Rebels' first score care in the 72nd minute when LaChere Anglin sent in a cross into the box to Shoughro, who then sent a shot past UCI goalkeeper Erin Henry for 1-0 lead.
Senior forward Haley Partridge put the game away in the 85th minute as she scored on a breakaway down the middle of the field, giving the Rebels a 2-0 edge.
UNLV took 12 shots for the game, seven on goal, while UCI was credited with eight shots, four on goal. Rebel goalie Alicia Lugo posted four saves in the net to earn her 14th career shutout, and Henry finished with five saves.
The Rebels will next return to the field this weekend, when they host the UNLV Nike Classic in Las Vegas at Peter Johann Field. UNLV will meet intrastate rival Neavda, Reno in the first game on Friday at 1 pm, which will be followed by a Saturday afternoon game against Pacific, also at 1 pm.
