RIVERSIDE, Calif. (UNLVRebels.com) - UNLV senior forward Jenn Wolfe posted two goals, including the game-winner with just over eight minutes left, to lift the Rebels to a season-opening victory at UC Riverside in women's soccer action on Friday night at the UCR Soccer Stadium.
"It was a fantastic game for the team tonight, I was very proud of our play tonight," said UNLV head coach Michael Coll. "To come on the road and score three goals in your opener is very impressive. And I was just as happy to see how we responded after they tied the game twice. For us to come back and go ahead both times really showed that our team has a lot of fight in them."
Wolfe, who turned in the second multi-goal game of her career, started the scoring with a strike in the 11th minute. Sophomore Susie Bernal started the play when she stole a bad pass from a UCR defender, and the slotted a pass to Wolfe, who beat the goalkeeper to the corner for the score.
The Highlanders tied the game at 1-1 in the 34th minute when Danielle Lopez stole the ball near midfield, feed a streaking Celina Valencia who took it all the way in before scoring to the right side. Just minutes later though the Rebels went back ahead, when Denali Murnan took on UCR keeper Elizabeth Silas one-on-one before sending a shot past her and into the back of the net. That put UNLV up 2-1 in the 39th minute, and it would be the halftime lead as well.
There was almost 40 minutes of action before the next goal was scored. This time it was provided by the home team, with Tyler Cunningham heading in a corner kick from close range in the 78th minute. That knotted the score at 2-2, with Alina Cheatham getting credit for the assist. UNLV would answer, and again it was Bernal and Wolfe factoring in the scoring. This time Bernal won a 50-50 ball in the air, heading it down to Wolfe, who then beat one player before scoring the game-winner, the eighth in her career, in the 82nd minute.
Kylie Wassell finished with five saves in goal for UNLV, while Silas posted three for the Highlanders. UCR held a slight 12-11 edge on shots, and 7-6 on shots on goal. Corner kicks were 3-2 in favor of UNLV.
The Rebels return to action on Sunday with a second straight road game at a Big West opponent, this time at UC Irvine with a 1 pm start.
