Cougars Drop The Rebels 2-1

PULLMAN, Wash. - Washington State scored the first two goals of the game and held on for a 2-1 victory over UNLV in the second game of the Cougar Classic women's soccer tournament on Friday afternoon. It was the season opener for both teams, and UNLV will now play Oregon State, who fell to No. 25 Gonzaga 2-1 in the first game, on Sunday morning at 11 am.
The Cougars notched the first goal of the game in the 42nd minute, as Anna Miller sent a free kick past UNLV goalkeeper Ciera Nero into the back of the net. The game-winner came in the 64th minute, when Brooke Bemis scored off assists from Carly Dobratz and Matalie Elkind.
UNLV closed within one in the 81st minute, when junior forward Katie Carney converted a penalty kick to make the score 2-1, but the Rebels could not add a tying score.
Nero finished with five saves while allowing two goals for UNLV. Brynn Bemis earned the win in goal for UNLV, posting three saves and allowing one score. The Cougars held a 13-7 edge on shots, and 6-3 on corner kicks.
