Box Score

LAS VEGAS - Cal State Northridge scored once in each half and broke UNLV's nine-game home win streak with a 2-0 victory over the Rebels in collegiate women's soccer action on Friday night from Peter Johann Memorial Field in the season opener for both teams.

Despite being outshot 9-4 in the first half, the Matadors came up with the eventual game-winning score in the 22nd minute. Sara Davis lofted a pass from midfield over the Rebel defenders to Kaitlyn Kelly, who raced down the right side of the box unopposed and sent a shot over sliding UNLV freshman goalkeeper Ciera Nero for a 1-0 lead at 21:21. Nero was making her first career start in goal in place of senior all-conference goalkeeper Jenna Huff, who will miss the first six weeks of the season due to a broken bone in her left foot suffered during preseason practice.

UNLV kept pressuring Cal State Northridge the entire game, but could only get a few good looks at goal, while Matador goalkeeper April Cline finished with six saves to earn the shutout. CSUN added an insurance goal in the final minutes, as Mary Ortega streaked down field and collected a long pass from midfield. After making a move to break away from the Rebel defender, she crossed a shot to the left post for the second score of the night at 86:18.

The Rebels finished the game with a 17-14 edge on shots, and 7-3 on corner kicks, while CSUN was called for 14 fouls to 10 for UNLV. Nero finished with six saves and two goals allowed.

UNLV remains at home to host in-state rival Nevada, Reno on Sunday at 4 pm at Peter Johann Field.
