Carney, Rebels Top Titans
Aug. 31, 2007
LAS VEGAS - Senior forward Katie Carney scored two goals, including one less then two minutes into the contest, to carry the UNLV women's soccer team over Cal State Fullerton 2-0 in the season opener for both teams on Friday night from Peter Johann Memorial Field. The game was the second of two in the UNLV adidas Classic, which saw Arizona State hold off Idaho State 1-0 in the opening contest.
The game's first goal came with just 1:38 gone on the clock. Following a CSU Fullerton foul, Carney took a free kick 35 yards out from the goal, and her blast sailed high towards the back left side of the goal. Titan goalkeeper Shayla Sabin leaped up to grab the ball, but couldn't collect it in and as she fell to the ground, the ball rolled out of her grasp and in the goal for the score and a 1-0 Rebel advantage.
Carney almost scored just two minutes later, as she just missed getting her foot on a cross with a wide open goal from five yards out. Both teams would have more changes in the half, with the Titans holding an 8-6 edge, but UNLV took the 1-0 lead into halftime.
The Rebels were more aggressive in the second half, taking 10 shots to just three for CSU Fullerton. Carney would put the game away in the 81st minute, as she collected a pass from Armani Rice and sent another long shot, this time from 30 yards out, to the back right side of the goal, for a 2-0 UNLV edge.
"In the second half we came out on fire, we had more opportunities, which was nice to see, while (Alicia) Lugo had a very good game in goal," said UNLV head coach Kat Mertz.
Lugo earned the shutout for UNLV, making four saves, including three outstanding ones. Sabin allowed two goals while finishing with seven saves. UNLV held a 16-11 edge on shots, and 6-3 on corner kicks.
UNLV will play Arizona State on the final day of the adidas Classic on Sunday at 1:30 pm, while Cal State Fullerton takes on Idaho State at 11 am, with both games played at Johann Memorial Field.
