Rebels Shutout Grizzlies 3-0 In Fila Classic
Sept. 5, 2004
Las Vegas - UNLV women's soccer extended its winning streak to three games Sunday afternoon, beating Montana 3-0 in front of 235 fans in the third game of the UNLV Fila Classic at Peter Johan Memorial Field. UNLV improved to 3-1 while the Grizzlies fell to 2-1-1. Kent State defeated Northern Arizona 2-1 in the final game of the Fila Classic.
The Rebels got on the board early, as Jessica Destito scored at the 7:50 mark of the first half, giving UNLV the early lead. Destito, who scored Friday's game winner in the Rebels' 1-0 double-overtime victory over Kent State, deflected a shot from Nickie Olson past UM goalkeeper Molly Gilbert.
Although UNLV didn't have many scoring opportunities, the Rebels only attempted 13 shots, they capitalized on the ones they had.
At the 31:24 of the first half Olson was on the receiving end of a pass from Jessica Brown and headed in her first goal of the season, moving the score to 2-0 as the game reached halftime.
Angie Inzana capped the scoring at the 72:57 mark of the game, floating a shot from the right side over the head of Gibson and into the net. Destito assisted on the goal and finished the Fila Classic with two goals and an assist.
Jenna Huff made five saves for her second straight shutout, and the Rebel defense limited the Grizzlies' scoring chances. Montana attempted only nine shots and its best scoring chance came late in the game when Lindsay Winans' header hit the crossbar.
In the final game Kent State forward Kimberly Dimitroff's goal at the 48:53 mark of the game lifted the Golden Flashes past Northern Arizona. Amy Kessler quickly put KSU on the board first, scoring a goal at the 1:21 mark of the first half. Dani Davis scored the equalizer for Northern Arizona at the 30:33 mark of the game.
UNLV will be on the road for two games next week in Texas, as the Rebels will play Houston on Sept. 10 and Rice on Sept. 12.
