LAS VEGAS (UNLVRebels.com) - Senior Sarah Naranjo's first career goal late in the second half lifted the UNLV women's soccer team to a 1-0 victory over Oregon in the second game of the UNLV Nike Classic on Friday night at Peter Johann Memorial Field. The win improved UNLV to a school-record 5-1 mark, while the Ducks dropped to 2-2-2 for the year.
Both team had their chances during the night, with visiting Oregon squad holding a slight 14-12 edge on shots. The Ducks also finished with eight corner kicks in the game to just three for UNLV, but it would be a Rebel corner kick that lead to the lone goal of the night.
The winning score came in the 79th minute as Macy Jo Harrison sent a corner kick into the middle of the box. The ball was kicked back out by an Oregon defender, but Harrison came up with the ball and served it back into the box. Naranjo rose up and headed it in from 10 yards out to the far post for the game-winner.
Freshman Kylie Wassell posted eight saves in goal on the way to her second career shutout. Cody Miles finished with five saves in the net for Oregon.
The Rebels will wrap up action in the UNLV Nike Classic on Sunday, facing Cal State Northridge at 1 pm. The Matadors were 1-0 winners over Kansas in the first game on Friday. Kansas and Oregon will also play on Sunday, starting at 10:30 am.
