Overtime Once More|
Sept. 11, 2009
LAS VEGAS - Though both teams had numerous scoring chances, combining for 37 total shots, all the scoring would happen in the first 5:02 of the game as UNLV and UC Irvine played to a 1-1 double-overtime tie in women's soccer action on Friday night from Peter Johann Memorial Field. It marked the third straight overtime game for the Rebels and second in three games that ended in a tie as their record now moves to 2-2-3 on the season, while UCI's is 5-1-1 for the year.
The first goal of the game came from the visiting Anteaters. Dana Sanderlin dribbled through several defenders in middle of the field and unleashed a hard shot that beat UNLV goalkeeper Alicia Lugo to the left corner for a 1-0 lead in the fifth minute. Just 41 seconds later the score would be tied when UNLV's Dani Morin served up a long high arching pass that found the head of Amanda Forrester, who redirected the ball to the back of the net for the tying goal.
Forrester's goal would be the last of the night as the teams would hold each other scoreless for the next 105 minutes of the contest. The Rebels had several good chances to get a second goal, with Ashleigh Shoughro twice hitting the crossbar on shots, while the Rebels looked to have two breakaways in the second half, only to have UCI goalkeeper Danielle de Seriere come out at the last second to snag the ball. The Anteater goalkeeper finished the game with five saves, and Lugo was credited with 11 in goal for UNLV.
UCI finished the game with a 21-16 edge on shots, 12-6 on shots on goal, and a 5-4 advantage on corner kicks.
UNLV will have a week off before returning to action next Friday, Sept. 18, when it travels to California to face San Francisco in a 5 pm contest.
