SANTA BARBARA, Calif. - Playing in its fourth straight game away from home, the UNLV women's soccer team was forced to settle for a 1-1 double-overtime tie at UC Santa Barbara on Sunday afternoon.
The Rebels (3-2-1) struck first, scoring on their first shot of the game when Katie Carney took a pass from Shannon Hughes into the box, and sent a shot to the left post for a goal in the 29th minute. It was her team-high third goal of the season.
The Gauchos held a 5-2 shot advantage in the first half, but the Rebels took the 1-0 lead into halftime. UNLV actually held a 7-6 edge on shots in the second half, but this time it would be the host team who found the back of the net. Jacqui Simon scored her first goal of the season in the 78th minute, as following a rebounded shot, Sami Svrcek sent a pass into the box that a sliding Simon knocked into the goal.
Both teams took one shot each in the first overtime period, while UNLV took the only shot of the second period, but neither team could put another goal on the scoreboard, resulting in the tie.
Rebel goalkeeper Alicia Lugo finished with two saves, while Katie Wright posted five saves for the Gauchos.
The Rebels will return to action this weekend in the UNLV Rebel Classic. On Friday, which will see four games on Peter Johann Field, Iowa State and Nevada, Reno play at 11 am, followed by UNLV and Washington State at 1:30 pm.
