Sept. 16, 2005
LAS VEGAS - Nicole Gutierrez's goal in the 71st minute lifted Fresno State to a 1-0 shutout victory over UNLV in the second game of the UNLV adidas Women's Soccer Classic on Friday night from Peter Johann Memorial Field. The loss snapped the Rebels' five-game unbeaten streak. In the first game of the day, Long Beach State coasted past Sam Houston State 3-0.
UNLV (3-3-2) and Fresno State (2-5) didn't produce many scoring chances in the first half, as the teams combined for just five shots. The Bulldogs managed just three in the second half, but were able to find the back of the net for the game-winner, as Gutierrez collected a long pass down the right side, and raced towards the goal. UNLV goalkeeper Ciera Nero came out in an attempt to steal the pass before Gutierrez received it, but instead Gutierrez sidestepped around Nero and blasted a shot into the open net from 20 yards out for the score.
UNLV had two good scoring chances in the final five minutes, one by Heather Killoch following a corner kick, but her header was just wide to the right. In the final minute, Nickie Olson's free kick was just over the top of the crossbar.
The Rebels finished with a 9-6 edge on shots, while both teams had five corner kicks. Nero finished with one save, and Bulldog goalkeeper Angie Larsen posted three saves to earn the shutout.
In the first game, Hayley Bolt scored the first two goals and assisted on the third, and the 49ers attempted a school-record 31 shots in the 3-0 win over the BearKats. Long Beach State (5-1) will next play UNLV on Sunday afternoon at 1:30 pm, while Fresno State and Sam Houston State (0-6) will meet at 11 am, both games at Peter Johann Field.
