Rebels Suffer Home Setback
Sept. 19, 2008
LAS VEGAS - Despite holding an overwhelming advantage on shots (35-8), the UNLV women's soccer team suffered a stunning upset on Friday night when it allowed two second half goals and fell to Robert Morris 2-1 on Friday night in the second game of the UNLV Rebel Classic from Peter Johann Memorial Field. The loss broke UNLV's 12-game home unbeaten streak, and sent its record to 6-2-1 on the year, while the Colonials improved to 3-3.
UNLV went ahead early 1-0 in the first half, but could never connect on a second goal thanks to outstanding play in the goal from RMU goalkeeper Caitlin Dilal. By far the star of the night, Dilal was called upon to make athletic saves all night long, and would finish the contest with 14 saves. The Rebels meanwhile had backup goalkeeper Nicole Adams in the net for the game, and she finished the night with four saves, but two goals allowed over the 90 minutes.
RMU's first score came in the 59th minute, as Kathleen Caggiano was chasing down a long pass that was rolling into the box. Adams came out to charge the ball, but as she went down to the ground the ball slid under her, and Caggiano jumped over Adams and had a clear shot on the goal, which she finished to tie the game at 1-1.
Caggiano would also score the game winner when she lifted up a long lob shot from 30 yards out that fell in over Adams' hands and into the goal for the Colonials' second goal, putting them up 2-1 in the 74th minute. UNLV made several attacks over the final 16 minutes in an attempt to tie the game, but couldn't get past Dilal in goal.
The first goal of the night was in the 21st minute thanks to Amanda Forrester, as following a RMU foul, Brie Kuhne sent the free kick into the box that was headed into the right side of the goal by Forrester for a 1-0 UNLV lead.
UNLV finished the night with 35 shots, while its 16 shots on goal tied a school record.
The Rebels will return to action on Sunday, when they will face Niagara at 11:30 am in the final game of the UNLV Rebel Classic.
