IRVINE, Calif. - The UNLV women's soccer team continues to struggle finding the back of the net, as they were shutout for the fourth time in their last five games, 2-0 at UC Irvine on Sunday afternoon. The loss marked the first time this year the Rebels have lost back-to-back games, and sent them to 3-4-3 on the year, while the host Anteaters improved to 2-7-1 overall.
While the first half was a defensive struggle, with a total of only three shots being taken, the second half was a different story with the two teams combining for 13. UCI finished with just two shots in the opening period, but made them count as Lauren Curtis scored off a cross from Lauren Baer for a 1-0 lead in the 30th minute. Megan Ortiz was also credited with an assist on the score.
After being held to just one shot in the first 45 minutes, UNLV outshot the Anteaters 7-6 in the second half, but could not come up with a tying score. UCI sealed the game in the 90th minute, as Ortiz scored with 37 seconds left for a 2-0 advantage. Joy Grey and Dayne Knowles both assisted on the score.
Ciera Nero finished with two saves and two goals allowed for the Rebels, while Rosie Aguilera posted three saves to earn the shutout for UCI.
