Sept. 25, 2008

Box Score

LAS VEGAS - UNLV scored three goals in a 13-minute stretch to claim its eighth win of the year, 3-1 over Northern Colorado on Thursday night in women's collegiate soccer action from Peter Johann Memorial Field. The Rebels improved to 8-2-1 with the win, giving them eight wins before the month of October for the first time in school history, while the Bears dropped to 5-6.

UNLV kept the pressure on Northern Colorado the entire game, holding an 18-5 advantage on shots while keeping the ball on the Bears' side of the field for the majority of the game. UNLV outshot the visitors 8-2 in the opening 45 minutes, but couldn't find the back of the net in the first half. The Rebels would have to wait until the 55th minute to put themselves on the scoreboard, as following a scramble for the ball inside the box, Ashleigh Shoughro scored from close range for her sixth goal of the season. Shannon Hughes assisted on the score.

The next Rebel score came in the 65th minute when Haley Partridge sent a pass to Niki Connolly, who dribbled into the box, drove past the UNC goalie that came out to charge the ball and sent a shot to the middle of the goal for a 2-0 lead. Three minutes later UNLV added to its advantage when Brianna Moore unleashed a hard shot from 20 yards out that stayed low to the ground and just beat the goalie to the left post for the score in the 68th minute. Connolly would be credited with an assist on the score.

UNLV's hopes for a shutout were shot down just moments after its final goal, when the Bears stole a pass deep inside the Rebels side of the field, and Ariel Cook drew out the Rebels' goalie before scoring from 10 yards out in the 68th minute, for a 3-1 score.

Alicia Lugo made one save in goal for UNLV, while Kirstin Salminen played the first 58 minutes, and made three saves while allowing one goal before leaving with an apparent leg injury. Heidi Owen was in goal for the final 33 minutes for the Bears, and made one save while allowing two scores.

UNLV will return to action on Sunday, with a road contest at UC Riverside at 6 pm.
