LAS VEGAS - UNLV (3-3-4) scored the only goal it would need less then two minutes into the contest as the Rebels posted a 2-0 victory over Southern Utah (2-6-1) in women's soccer action on Saturday afternoon from Peter Johann Memorial Field.
The Rebels held a commanding advantage on shots for the game, 23-4, and only allowed the Thunderbirds to attempt one shot in the first half. The day's first score for UNLV came just 92 seconds into the game when Dani Morin served up a high cross from the right side into the middle of the box, where Brianna Moore headed the ball into the goal from five yards out for a 1-0 lead and her first goal of the year.
UNLV added to its lead in the 41st minute, and again it was set up by a long cross from the right side, this time from Jamie McCoy. Jenna Larkin got her leg on the ball, and her shot attempt bounced high to the right side of the goal and through the SUU goalie for a 2-0 Rebel advantage. It was Larkin's second goal of the season.
Alicia Lugo made two saves in goal for UNLV to record her fourth shutout of the season and the 23rd of her career. Breana Fitzgerald collected six saves while allowing two goals for the Thunderbirds.
UNLV returns to action next weekend when it will compete in the San Diego State Classic. The Rebels will meet Seattle on Friday, Oct. 2 at 1:30 pm, and then close out the tournament by playing Oregon State on Sunday, Oct. 4 at 11:30 am.
