Rebels Fall In Final Non-Conference Contest

RIVERSIDE, Calif. - In a game that saw all the scoring come in the first 24 minutes, UC Riverside held off UNLV for a 3-2 victory on Sunday night in women's collegiate soccer action. The loss sent the Rebels' record to 8-3-1, while the Highlanders improved to 5-5-1 on the season.

UCR scored the game's first goal when Heidi Garrett stole a pass on UNLV's side of the field and scored in the 13th minute for a 1-0 lead.

The Rebels answered back in the 16th minute, as a give-and-go between Ashleigh Shoughro and Dani Morin resulted in a shot by Morin to the left corner for her first career goal. UNLV took a 2-1 lead just one minute later, when Shoughro stole the ball from a Highlander defender and passed off to Amanda Forrester, who placed a shot to the upper left corner for the score in the 17th minute.

Ashley Parks tied the game for UCR in the 19th minute, heading in a corner kick from Letty Villalpando in the 19th minute. The Highlanders then scored again in the 24th minute, a goal from Kristina Kelly that would turn out to be the game-winner. Garrett and Tessa Lennala assisted on the score.

UNLV finished the game with a 25-18 edge on shots, but Brittany Goetz was strong in goal for the Highlanders, coming up with 10 saves, while UCR also had three team saves. Alicia Lugo made four saves in goal for UNLV while allowing three scores.

The Rebels have finished non-conference play, and will play its Mountain West Conference opener on Friday at San Diego State, in a game televised by the Mtn. network at 4 pm.
