LAS VEGAS (UNLVRebels.com) - New Mexico's Jennifer Williams scored three second-half goals, including two in the final six minutes, to give the Lobos a 4-0 win over UNLV in the Mountain West Conference women's soccer opener for both teams on Friday night from Peter Johann Memorial Field. The loss broke the Rebels' three-game win streak, sending them to 8-4 on the season, while UNM improved to 7-1-3 for the year.
Both teams took four shots each in the first half, with the Lobos taking a 1-0 lead in the 35th minute off a shot from Jael Fanning from outside of the box. Williams assisted on the play. UNLV turned up its attack in the second half, posting a total of 10 shots, but the Rebels could not get the ball past Lobos goalies Kelli Cornell and Sydney George, both of whom played one half each and combined for six saves.
Williams scored the night's second goal in the 51st minute when she dribbled through the Rebel defense and unleased a shot to the far post. She also posted goals in the 84th minute (unassisted) and 88th minute, with Rachel Fields assisting on the final score.
Kylie Wassell posted two saves in the net for UNLV. The Rebels held a 14-9 edge on shots, and 4-3 on corner kicks.
