Haley Partridge, Aztec Conqueror
Oct. 3, 2008
SAN DIEGO, Calif. - For the third time in her career, UNLV senior forward Haley Partridge scored the game-winner in a one-goal victory over San Diego State, as her second-half goal gave the Rebels a 2-1 victory at SDSU in the Mountain West Conference season opener for both teams on Friday afternoon from the SDSU Sports Deck. The win improved the Rebels to 9-3-1 on the year, while the Aztecs dropped to 4-6-1 as they suffered their first loss at home this year in four contests.
Partridge's game-winner came in the 59th minute, as she took a pass from Ashleigh Shoughro in the midfield and broke away from the defense before unleashing a blast that went through the Aztec goalie to the back of the net to put UNLV up 2-1. It was Partridge's second goal of the year, and her third game-winning goal against the Aztecs all-time, as she scored a golden goal against SDSU in the 2006 MWC Tournament semifinals on Nov. 3, 2005 in a 2-1 win, and again last year in a 1-0 win on Oct. 14.
The Rebels defense then held strong, limiting SDSU to just three shots over the final 31 minutes to come away with the victory, just their second-ever on the Aztecs' home field.
SDSU scored the afternoon's first goal just over three minutes into the contest. Megan McQueeny brought the ball close to the box, and blasted a shot to the far left corner for a quick score and a 1-0 Aztec lead in the 4th minute. UNLV would tie the game in the 17th minute thanks to Shoughro's team-leading seventh goal of the year. Her score was set up by Niki Connolly, who drew two defenders to her before passing to Shoughro on the right side. Shoughro went in unmarked before sending a hard shot past the SDSU goalkeeper for the tying goal, making the score 1-1.
Alicia Lugo finished with three saves in goal for UNLV, while Aubree Southwick posted two saves in the net for SDSU. UNLV held a 9-7 edge on shots, and 4-2 edge on corner kicks.
UNLV will return to action next week, as it continues its four-game road trip with a pair of games in Utah. The Rebels will play BYU on Thursday, Oct. 9 at 6 pm in Provo, Utah, before taking on Utah on Saturday, Oct. 11 at 6 pm in Salt Lake City.
