Oct. 14, 2007
LAS VEGAS - Junior forward Haley Partridge's first half goal gave the UNLV women's soccer team a 1-0 victory over San Diego State in Mountain West Conference action on Sunday afternoon from Peter Johann Memorial Field. The win pushed UNLV's unbeaten streak to four games, and the Rebels are undefeated in league play at 1-0-1, 6-3-5 overall, while the Aztecs dropped to 6-6-2, 1-1 in the MWC.
The game was tight throughout, with both teams finishing with nine shots each. The lone goal of the game came in the final minute of the first half, as Armani Rice took the ball down the left side of the field, and sent a high cross over the box to the left side. Partridge moved in and headed a hard shot to the top of the goal for the score, her first of the year, to put UNLV up 1-0 at the 44:08 mark.
SDSU's best chance to score came in the 81st minute, when the Aztecs had a flurry of shots on goal. First, Lauren Marquez hit the crossbar from 18 yards out, and the ball came back out to Ali Lokanc, who quickly shot on goal but a Rebel defender was able to get in the way just in time to make a team save on the baseline. Heather Vandevanter then had one final chance as she collected the rebound, but her shot was stopped by UNLV goalkeeper Alicia Lugo.
Lugo finished the game with three saves to earn her seventh shutout of the season. Aztec goalie Aubree Southwick posted two saves while allowing one goal.
The Rebels will take to the road for their next two games, as they will meet New Mexico on Friday, Oct. 19 at 6 pm (PST) in Albuquerque, N.M., and will follow that with a Sunday, Oct. 21 contest at TCU in Fort Worth, Texas, at 11 am (PST).
