Oct. 18, 2003
LAS VEGAS - UNLV fought to the very end, but couldn't put home a tying goal as BYU claimed a 3-2 victory over the Rebels in Mountain West Conference women's soccer action on Saturday night from Peter Johann Field. With the win, BYU moved to 11-4-1, 3-1 in the conference, while UNLV fell to 6-8-2, 0-3 in the MWC.
BYU took command of the game early with two quick goals. Terra Bigelow scored the first goal of the game on a blast from 15 yards out at the 12:35 mark for a 1-0 Cougar lead. Krissa Campbell then added to the lead, as she headed in Jamie Rendich's cross into the goal for a 2-0 lead at the 19:54 mark. The Rebels struck back though, when Annii Magluilo's shot was blocked by BYU goalie Natalie Evans, and Jessica Brown collected the rebound and sent a shot to the right post to make the score 2-1 at 36:57.
The Cougars scored again for a two-goal lead at the 63:42 mark, when Brooke Thulin tracked down a loose ball in the box and shot past UNLV goalie Jenna Huff into the left corner for a 3-1 advantage. UNLV answered quickly, as just 52 seconds later a Rebel corner kick into the box was kicked out by the Cougar defense, and Angie Inzana stepped in front and sent a hard shot to the left post to cut the lead to 3-2 at the 64:34 mark. UNLV would threaten several times during the rest of the game, but couldn't find the equalizing score.
Huff finished with 10 saves in goal for UNLV, while Evans posted six for the Cougars. UNLV was outshot 30-17 for the game, including 17-7 in the first half.
Next for the Rebels, they will travel to Albuquerque, N.M., for a road MWC game at New Mexico on Friday, Oct. 24 at 7 p.m..
