LAS VEGAS (UNLVRebels.com) -
UNLV women's soccer shut out Colorado State 3-0 in a Mountain West match on Sunday afternoon at Peter Johann Memorial Field with a goal in the first half and two in the second half. The Rebels improve to 8-9-0, 3-5-0 while the Rams drop to 3-12-2, 0-7-1.
"I thought the team put together a great performance from the beginning to the end," said head coach Chris Shaw. "I was very pleased with how the team played and hope we can continue to play at that level the rest of the season."
UNLV dominated the game from start to finish and had 15 shots in each half. Jodi Barber put the Rebels up for good in the fourth minute with her team-leading sixth goal of the season. After receiving a pass from Jordan Magnin, Susie Bernal dribbled the ball into the right corner and crossed it into the box to Barber for a shot that went into the left side of the net. The Rebels stretched the lead to two in the 33rd minute. Lily Sender picked up a bouncing ball and passed it over to Kaila Brinkman, and Brinkman scored just inside the box for her first goal of the season.
The Rebels generated the first scoring chance in the second half and scored in the 65th minute. Denali Murnan scored her third goal of the season after Dakota Blazak gathered a rebound from her own shot and nudged the ball over to Murnan right inside the box. Murnan's goal bounced off the right post and in.
Goalkeeper Jessie Clark picked up her third win and second shutout of the season after making eight saves. Eight different Rebels had at least two shots in the game. Barber led the way with seven and two on goal. Brinkman had five shots with two on goal, and Murnan had four.
UNLV goes on the road for its next two games. Up first is San Jose State next Friday at 12:00 pm, and then the Rebels will face Fresno State on Sunday at 1:00 pm.
