FORT WORTH, Texas - For the second straight game the UNLV women's soccer claimed an overtime victory on the road, as sophomore midfielder Shannon Hughes scored in the 98th minute to give the Rebels a 1-0 victory at TCU on Sunday afternoon in Mountain West Conference action. The win not only kept them undefeated in conference play at 3-0-1 (8-3-5 overall), but also moved them to first place in the MWC standings. The Horned Frogs dropped to 7-9, 2-3 in league play.
Neither team could find the back of the net through the first 90 minutes, though they both took plenty of shots, as UNLV had 17 while the host Horned Frogs took 16. Just three shots total were taken in overtime, but the Rebels would connect on their second one. Following a TCU foul, Katie Carney took the ensuring free kick, which came to Hughes who then placed the ball in the back of the net for the golden-goal. The goal also marked the second straight game Carney assisted on the game-winner in overtime, and ties her for the all-time lead in career assists at UNLV with 18.
Goalie play was strong on both sides, with Alicia Lugo coming up with four saves to earn her eighth shutout of the season, which ties the UNLV single season record. Kelsey Walters was credited with five saves for TCU.
UNLV will return home for its next game, as the Rebels will host Air Force on Friday, Oct. 26 at 7 pm at Peter Johann Memorial Field.
