COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. (UNLVRebels.com) - UNLV moved into first place in the Mountain West thanks to a 1-0 win at Air Force on Friday night in women's college soccer action at Cadet Soccer Stadium.
The Rebels (7-8-2, 3-1 MW), winners of four of their last five games, scored the winning goal in the beginning of the second half when senior forward Katherine Orellana slipped behind the defense, received a pass and scored from 12 yards out in the 47th minute for a 1-0 Rebel lead. It was her team-high fifth goal of the year, and first game-winner of the season.
The goal came after a first half in which UNLV dominated the offensive side, outshooting Air Force 11-3 though not coming up with a score. Following the UNLV goal, the Falcons stepped up their attack over the rest of the game, outshooting the Rebels 12-7 in the second half. Kylie Wassel was strong in goal for UNLV, coming up with four second-half stops (five total for the game), to earn her fourth shutout of the season, and the second straight team shutout for the Rebels.
UNLV finished the night with an 18-15 edge on shots, and 12-5 on shots on goal. Air Force had four corner kicks to two for the Rebels. Air Force keeper Kelly Stambaugh finished with 11 saves on the night.
The Rebels stay on the road for their next game, in Laramie against Wyoming on Sunday at 12 pm (PT).
