LAS VEGAS (UNLVRebels.com) - A penalty kick in the 104th minute of the game lifted San Diego State to a 2-1 double-overtime win over UNLV in the Mountain West women's soccer regular season finale for both teams on Friday afternoon at Peter Johann Field. Both teams had come into the game tied for second in the MW, but the Rebels now drop to 7-9-3 on the year, 3-2-1 in league play, while SDSU improved to 10-6-3, 4-1-1 in the MW.
San Diego State started the scoring with a goal in the first half, when Sophie Metz sent a high arching shot to the top right corner of the goal from 25 yards out for a 1-0 edge in the 26th minute. Sarah Halverson assisted on the score.
UNLV tied up the game in the 79th minute thanks to Katherine Orellana. On her Senior Day, she posted her team-high sixth goal of the year when she dribbled through several defenders on the right side and sent off a hard shot that banked off the left post before crossing over the goalline. Jackie Tillotson was credited with the assist on the goal that made it a 1-1 contest. UNLV kept up the pressure the rest of the second half, but could not come up with a deciding score, leading to overtime.
Over the first overtime period UNLV were the aggressors, taking all three shots. The game was decided early in the second overtime period, when an Aztec player was fouled inside the box, leading to a penalty kick. Cat Walker converted the kick, giving SDSU the victory.
UNLV was outshot 16-11 in the game, and SDSU held a 4-3 edge on corner kicks. Shots on goal were tied at seven each. Kylie Wassell finished the night with five saves in goal for UNLV, and the Aztecs' Rachel Boaz was credited with six.
The Rebels will next play in the 2011 Mountain West Tournament, held in Albuquerque, N.M., on Nov. 2-6. UNLV will play in the first round on Nov. 2, with the time and opponent to be announced on Saturday.
