LAS VEGAS - UNLV women's soccer player Jenny Ruiz (Corona, Calif.) has earned a spot on the Mexican National Team roster and will compete for the next 10 days in the 2003 Australia Cup held in Canberra, Australia.

In women's "A" pool play, Mexico will take on Sweden on Jan. 26, host country Australia on Jan. 31 and the Korean Republic on Feb. 1. Ruiz, a sophomore defender for the Rebels, scored three goals in an exhibition match versus a Mexican club team last week. She has been training with the national team over the winter break in Mexico City and could be placed in the team's starting lineup this weekend.

The FIFA Women's World Cup will be held on Sept. 24 through Oct. 11 and Mexico is one victory away from reaching the 2003 tournament in China. As the third-place team of the CONCACAF Women's Gold Cup, Mexico will enter a playoff with the third-place team from Asia for a qualifying berth. In 1999, Mexico qualified for the Women's World Cup. The United States and Canada have already booked passage to next year's tournament.
