LAS VEGAS - Despite returning seven starters from last year's Mountain West Conference regular season championship squad, UNLV was picked to finish fourth in the 2005 MWC preseason coaches' poll, the league announced on Monday.
Utah, the 2004 MWC Tournament champions, received all seven first place votes and were atop the poll with 49 points. The Rebels under first-year head coach Katherine Mertz, return seven starters, led by two-time all-conference senior goalkeeper Jenna Huff. UNLV also brings back nine of its top 10 scorers in 2004, including sophomore forward Katie Carney, who led the team as a freshman with five goals and 11 points. Last season the Rebels posted the best season in school history, with a 12-5-2 mark while winning its first-ever MWC regular season title with a 5-1 conference mark. UNLV also earned its first-ever NCAA Tournament appearance with an at-large bid, falling to No. 21 San Diego 1-0 in double-overtime.
