Aug. 15, 2007
LAS VEGAS - UNLV, three-time defending conference champions, was picked to finish third in the 2006 Mountain West Conference women's soccer preseason poll released on Wednesday morning, while BYU and Utah both tied for first place.
Utah, who won the 2006 regular season conference title, and BYU both advanced to last year's NCAA Tournament, and both received 46 points and split the eight first-place votes to sit atop the preseason poll. UNLV received its highest predicted finish ever with 37 points for third, while San Diego State was fourth with 29. New Mexico was picked to finish fifth with 23 points, followed by TCU in sixth (20), Wyoming seventh (15), and Air Force eighth (7).
The Rebels, under third-year head coach Katherine Mertz, returns 10 starters from last year's squad that made its third-straight NCAA Appearance. Three all-conference performances highlight the UNLV returnees, including first-team All-MWC defender Brie Kuhne, and second-team members midfielder Erica Jensen and forward Armani Rice. Last season the Rebels finished at 9-11-3, but earned the first-ever win over a ranked team, and shutout top-20 BYU and Utah to win the league tournament championship in Salt Lake City.
UNLV opens its season on Friday, Aug. 31 against Cal State Fullerton as it hosts the UNLV adidas Classic in Las Vegas, and will begin defense of its Mountain West Conference championship at Utah on Oct. 11.
