Women's Soccer Picked Third in MWC Preseason Poll

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. - The UNLV women's soccer team received its highest preseason ranking in the Mountain West Conference with a third-place vote by the league's coaches in a preseason poll released Friday.
BYU, a 2002 NCAA Women's College Cup qualifier and three-time defending conference champions, was selected as the favorite to win the league title and collected a total of 36 points (six first-place votes) to capture the top spot in the poll. Utah came in second, earning 28 points with one first-place vote. UNLV (22), San Diego State (21), New Mexico (20), Air Force (14) and Wyoming (6) followed both schools in the voting.
UNLV finished the 2001 season with a school record 12 victories and advanced to the championship game of the conference tournament for the first time in school history. The Rebels return 15 starters and a pair of MWC second team selections. UNLV was previously picked fourth in 2001 and sixth in 2000.
The Rebels commence the 2002 season with an exhibition match versus Dixie College on Wednesday, Aug. 21 at 7:30 p.m. The game will be played at Peter Johann Memorial Field in Las Vegas with free admission to the public. UNLV opens the regular season on Friday, Aug. 30 at the University of Kansas, a 2002 NCAA Tournament participant.
