Home Opener Weekend

Aug. 26, 2010

UNLV weekly soccer notes (Las Vegas Invitational)

Coming off its first season-opening victory since 2006, the UNLV women's soccer team is ready for its home-opener as the Rebels will host the Las Vegas Invitational this Friday and Sunday at Peter Johann Memorial Field. First up for the Rebels will be Albany from the America East, while the Sun Belt’s Louisiana-Monroe will be the competition on Sunday. Friday’s game kicks off at 7 pm, while Sunday's contest, which features a 2-for-1 ticket promotion, begins at 1 pm. This will be the first meeting against both schools for the Rebels.

This is also the first of five straight weekends of tournaments the Rebels will play in. There will be two more in Las Vegas, the UNLV Nike Classic on Sept. 10 and 12, and the UNLV Rebel Classic on Sept. 17 and 19.

Friday’s game will be the first home game coached by first-year head coach Jennifer Klein, who started off her coaching career with the Rebels’ 1-0 victory at UC Riverside last week.

Players To Watch

Senior forward Ashleigh Shoughro is one of the top offensive threats in the Mountain West, and comes into her final season with 33 career points as a Rebel. Joining her in leading the offense is fellow senior and leader of the midfielders, Amanda Forrester, who also scored the Rebels’ game-winner in the victory at UC Riverside in the season opener on Aug. 20.

Other Rebels to look for include senior defender LaChere Anglin and sophomore forward Colette Jepson. Freshman Kylie Wassell got the start in goal for UNLV against the Highlanders, and stopped seven shots to earn the shutout win.

Scouting Albany

Friday’s game will be the season-opener for Albany. The Great Danes return eight starters from their 2009 squad that posted its best record in 21 seasons, 8-10-1. Highlighting the returnees is America East Rookie of the Year, forward Chelsea DeVerna.

Scouting Louisiana-Monroe

The Warhawks are 1-0 on the year after posting a 1-0 home victory over Central Arkansas on Aug. 20. Ashley Moore, a freshman midfielder, scored the game-winner for ULM, while sophomore Alex Holland played the entire 90 minutes in goal and posted six saves to earn the shutout. ULM is coming off a 4-13-2 record in 2009, and returns six starters from last year’s squad.

Weekly Honors

Freshman goalkeeper Kylie Wassell became the first Rebel to earn an honor this season as she was named MWC Defensive Player of the Week on Aug. 23 after posting a shutout in UNLV’s 1-0 win at UC Riverside on Aug. 20.

Next Time Out

UNLV will take off for the state of Colorado to play in the Denver Invitational, hosted by the University of Denver. The Rebels will open the weekend by taking on Drake on Saturday, Sept. 4 at 3:30 pm, followed by a Monday, Sept. 6 contest against either Colorado or Denver.
