Another Weekly Honor
Aug. 30, 2010
LAS VEGAS - UNLV's Ashleigh Shoughro was named Mountain West Conference Women's Soccer Offensive Player of the Week, it was announced by the league office on Monday. She is the second Rebel this season to be honored, as Kylie Wassell was the Defender of the Week on Aug. 23. It's also the third weekly honor in her three-year career at UNLV.
Shoughro, a senior forward and native of Las Vegas, exploded for six goals in a pair of Rebel victories over the weekend. Against Albany on Aug. 27, a 5-2 win, she set a new UNLV school record with four goals, breaking the previous record of three set three times before. The four-goal performance also tied the MWC single-game record as well, and was the first hat trick in her career. She followed that up with a pair of goals in UNLV's 4-0 win over Louisiana-Monroe on Sunday. The six goals are already triple her goal production from a year ago (two goals in 2008), and she leads the MWC in both goals and points (12).
Thanks to its 3-0 start, which is tied for the best in team history, UNLV has also moved back into the regional rankings, as the Rebels are 10th in the NSCAA Pacific Region poll, released on Monday. It's the first such ranking for UNLV since September of 2008.
UNLV will return to action this weekend when it travels to Denver, Colo., for the Denver Invitational. The Rebels will open the tournament by playing Drake on Saturday, Sept. 4 at 3:30 pm. UNLV will then face either Colorado or Denver on Sept. 6 in the second day of the tournament.
