Sept. 1, 2005
LAS VEGAS -
The UNLV women's soccer team will play its first road games of the season this weekend as the Rebels will take on Utah State and Arizona State. UNLV and the Aggies will first play on Friday at 3 pm in Logan, Utah, and then the Rebels will meet the Sun Devils of Arizona State on Sunday at 1 pm in Tempe.
The Rebels are 1-1 on the season, as they bounced back from a disappointing season-opening loss, in which the Rebels lost to Cal State Northridge 2-0 despite holding a 17-14 edge on shots, by blanking Nevada, Reno 5-0. The win also gave new UNLV head coach Katherine Mertz her first career coaching victory.
Sophomore Erica Frizzell (two goals) and Jessica Destito (one goal, two assists) lead the Rebels with four points apiece, while freshman goalie Ciera Nero has a 1.00 GAA and is averaging six saves a game.
Utah State enters its game against UNLV looking for its first win of 2005, and are 1-3 all-time against the Rebels. They are led by Dana Peart, who has scored both goals for the Aggies this year. Arizona State meanwhile is 1-1 on the season, after a loss to fifth-ranked Santa Clara and a 5-2 win over Weber State. Manya Makoski had two goals in the game to lead the Sun Devils in scoring.
