COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. -
For the first time in program history, UNLV swept the Mountain West Conference weekly honors, as Jessica Destito and Jenna Huff were named Women's Soccer Offensive and Defensive Players of the Week after leading the Rebels to a 2-0 weekend, the conference announced on Tuesday. The weekly honor was the second for Huff in her career, while it's the first mention for Destito.
Destito, a freshman forward and Las Vegas native who played at Cimarron High, made the first two goals of her collegiate career memorable ones, as both were game-winners to lift the Rebels to wins over Northern Arizona and Montana. On Friday, with just under five minutes left in double-overtime, she dribbled past two defenders and knocked in a shot to the left post for the golden goal and a 1-0 victory over the Lumberjacks. On Sunday, in her first career start she scored the opening goal just under eight minutes into the game, and followed with an assist on the final goal in UNLV's 3-0 win over Montana.
Huff, a junior goalkeeper from Huntington Beach, Calif., posted back-to-back shutouts in the wins over NAU and Montana. Against Northern Arizona she finished with seven saves, including a stop on a breakaway attempt, while on Sunday against Montana she tallied five saves. With the shutouts, she increased her school career shutout record to 13.
UNLV, 3-1 overall and riding a three-game win streak, take off for a trip to Houston this weekend. The Rebels take on Houston on Friday at 5 pm, followed by a game against Rice on Sunday at 11 am.
