Rebels Ready For Weekend Play

Sept. 9, 2010

UNLV weekly soccer notes

Though they suffered their first loss of the season in the first game of the Denver Invitational to Drake, the UNLV women's soccer team bounced back to take down Colorado 4-2 in the next game, and hope to ride the momentum of that game as it hosts the UNLV Rebel Classic this Friday and Sunday at Peter Johann Memorial Field. The first game will see UNLV (4-1) take on Oregon (2-1-2) for the first time in school history on Friday night at 7 pm, and that will be followed by a Sunday afternoon contest against Cal State Northridge (2-3) at 1 pm. Kansas is the fourth team participating in this weekend’s classic.

Though it’s winning streak was snapped last weak, the Rebels have still tied their best-ever five-game start to a season at 4-1. The biggest reason for the success this year is the offense, as the Rebels have scored 15 goals through the first five games, including three games of four or more goals. A year ago, UNLV scored a total of 15 goals, and never had more then two in a game.

Players To Watch

Senior forward Ashleigh Shoughro has quickly returned to her scoring form from her sophomore season, as she currently leads the Mountain West in both goals (six) and points (12) in just three games of action. Sophomore Colette Jepson meanwhile is second on the team with four goals and one assist for nine points. Also providing offense for UNLV this year is senior Amanda Forrester (two goals, two assists, six points) and sophomore Macy Jo Harrison with three assists and a goal for five points.

In goal for UNLV is freshman goalkeeper Kylie Wassell, who has a 1.33 GAA, 18 saves and one shutout on the year.

Scouting Oregon

The Ducks are 2-1-2 on the season, with the two wins coming over Boise State and UC Davis. Oregon has also played a total of three overtime games this season.

Leading the team is senior forward Jen Stoltenberg with three goals and eight points. Three more players have each scored one goal. In goal is a pair of keepers, Lindsay Parlee (0.45 GAA, six saves) and Cody Miles (0.59 GAA, 14 saves).

Scouting Cal State Northridge

The Matadors bring a 2-3 mark into Las Vegas for this weekend’s tournament. Two of the three losses are to top-15 squads (Portland, UCLA), while CSUN has wins over Saint Joseph’s and Pepperdine.

The top scorer in 2010 is Farryn Townley with a pair of goals, while Brittanie Sakajian has a goal and two assist for four points as well. The goalkeeper is Cynthia Jacobo, with a 1.82 GAA and 28 saves on the season.
