LAS VEGAS -

UNLV weekly soccer notes

The UNLV women’s soccer team (5-2) looks to bounce back from its first home loss of the season as it will host the UNLV Rebel Classic this weekend at Peter Johann Memorial Field. The Rebels will meet Long Beach State on Friday night at 7 pm, and finish up against UC Davis on Sunday with a 1 pm start, with both games being held at Peter Johann Memorial Field.

After averaging three goals a game through the first five contests, the Rebels hit a wall in their home tournament last weekend, finishing with just one goal over the two games of the UNLV Nike Classic. The one goal was a big one however, as Sarah Naranjo’s first career score gave UNLV a 1-0 win over Oregon, which also moved the Rebels in the Ducks spot in the Pacific regional rankings at 10th.

The Rebels are 3-0-2 all-time against the LBSU 49ers, with the last meeting resulting in a 1-0 win in Long Beach. This will be the first meeting between the Rebels and the Aggies of UC Davis.

Players To Watch

Senior forward Ashleigh Shoughro has quickly returned to her scoring form from her sophomore season, as she is currently tied for the Mountain West lead in both goals (six) and points (12). Sophomore Colette Jepson meanwhile is second on the team with four goals and one assist for nine points. Also providing offense for UNLV this year is senior Amanda Forrester (two goals, two assists, six points) and sophomore Macy Jo Harrison with three assists and a goal for five points.

In goal for UNLV is freshman keeper Kylie Wassell, who has a 1.08 GAA, 29 saves and one shutout on the year.

Scouting Long Beach State

L

BSU began the season at 4-1, which included a pair of wins over top 25 squads (2-1 over both No. 21 Washington State and No. 16 Virginia Tech). However, the 49ers have now gone three straight games without a goal, losing the last two, including a 6-0 loss at No. 19 California on Sunday.

The offense has come from one player this year, as Nadia Link has five of the team’s seven goals for 10 points total. Two more players are tied with three points each. In goal is Emily Kingsborough with a 1.27 GAA and 34 saves in 707 minutes of action.

Scouting UC Davis

The Aggies are 2-2-1 on the year, having opened the season with a 1-0 win at Sacramento State, and won their lost outing, 3-2 in overtime at Fresno State. UCD is 2-1 on the road this year as well, with the lone loss a 3-1 setback to Oregon.

Leading the team is sophomore forward Allison Kelly with three goals for six points, while senior midfielder Samantha Faber has three points (one goal, one assist). Maria Magana (0.86 GAA) and Kathleen Brandl (1.67 GAA) have split the time in goal this year.

A Return To The Rankings

UNLV is ranked 10th in the Sept. 14 NSCAA Pacific Regional rankings. UNLV made its first appearance in the Aug. 30 rankings, also at the No. 10 slot, marking the first ranking for the Rebels since October of 2008.

Next Time Out

UNLV will play its final non-conference action as it will participate in the Air Force Invitational in Colorado Springs, Colo., on Friday and Sunday, Sept. 24 and 26. The Rebels will meet VMI on Friday at 3 pm, followed by a 12 pm contest on Sunday against Weber State.
